Our thoughts and support are with Maui, Hawai’i

Updated: Oct 3, 2023

As the Alliance of Health Care Unions, our thoughts and support are with the Maui community and union family impacted by the catastrophic wildfires in Maui. The wildfires began on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, and the devastating impacts are still ongoing including the entire destruction of Lahaina, razed homes and businesses, several injuries, and the loss of dozens of lives.

Kaiser Permanente (KP), where our Alliance members provide care and service, operates 5 clinics on Maui. The KP Lahaina Clinic and the Lahaina dialysis center were completely destroyed overnight impacting hundreds of families, union members, and patients. KP efforts are currently underway to locate every KP and Maui Health employee and physician to make sure they are safe.

Alliance members in Hawai’i are represented by UNITE HERE! Local 5, Hawaii Nurses and Healthcare Professions (HNHP), United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals (UNAC/UHCP).

Our dedicated Alliance members in Maui have been on the frontlines of this terrible disaster delivering care, service, and comfort to those in need. Our registered nurses, alongside other healthcare professionals, have been treating people injured by the wildfires since Tuesday night.

Join us in showing support and solidarity to the impacted people of Maiu. Below are different ways you can show your support:

  • ILWU is shipping household donations until August 17

    • ILWU is organizing an emergency response to help deliver critical aid to impacted communities. You can drop off donations at ILWU Memorial Hall in Wilmington, CA.

  • Kaiser Permanente Gives

    • Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Maui Health will make an immediate donation of $300,000 as a first step, to help our first responders with urgent needs. The donation will be split between 3 organizations: the American Red Cross of Hawaii, the Maui Food Bank, and the Salvation Army of Hawaii.

    • Kaiser Permanente has set up a matching gift opportunity through their KPGives platform. Kaiser Permanente will match the first $100,000 in employee and physician donations to these 3 organizations.

  • Hawaii Community Foundation:

    • The Maui Strong Fund was created to provide community resilience with resources for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. The fund is currently being used to support communities affected by the wildfires on Maui.

As more opportunities to show our support and solidarity develop, we will share them on our social media channels.
